When was the last time God did something powerful in your life? Provided a need, answered a prayer, some one saved, etc…Surely we have all seen God do something powerful. On more than one occasion we have been down to the last of the meat in our freezer and someone has shown up with a bag full of caribou. It makes you instantly look to God and see that He knows what we need and when we need it. He knows how to provide for me. He knows how to encourage me. He knows how to protect me. I know that because I have seen Him do it over and over again.
When David was a young shepherd, God helped him defeat the lion and the bear in order to protect his sheep. He recognized God’s power and help. Then when he went to fight Goliath he remembered what God had already done for him. He said if God helped him defeat the lion and the bear than God will help him defeat the giant.
But what about when we forget what God has done for us? Or maybe we don’t forget we just ignore it. We allow our doubts and lack of faith to keep us from God’s blessing. The book of Numbers documents a very sad account. I think it’s sad. Remember when twelve men are sent out to spy on Canaan to see what kind of land it was?
They go and see that God was right (He always is). This land is wonderful. It has everything they will ever need and more. They come back with a great report for Moses. They showed him the huge grapes and said, “surely it floweth with milk and honey: and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless, the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled…” (Numbers 13:27-28) They go on to talk about how hard it would be to defeat the Canaanites and they didn’t think they should even try.
They are saying, “Yeah it is great, but…” They didn’t think God could defeat them. This is the same group of people that watched the Red Sea be split in two then walked across on dry land. These are the same people that have seen manna be provided for them everyday. They have seen God do miraculous things for them over and over again. And not only that, but this was the land that God had promised them! Still, they doubted God’s power and lost a lot that day.
Did they forget about all the wonderful things God had done for them? Were they not spiritually minded enough to have the faith to do what God told them to do? Were they choosing to live in fear, knowing that God was capable of so much more? I don’t know. Maybe the better question to ask is what is keeping me from following God in complete faith? Why am I forgetting the wonderful things God has done? Knowing all the amazing things He has done in the past am I still doubting that He can do amazing things in my life? And now ask yourself the same question: What is keeping you from following God in complete faith? What lions and bears have God already defeated and what giant are you facing now?
