The Power of Music

I am not sure how it is in your home, but here it seems like if Mom isn’t happy then no one is happy. I am seeing that I really set the mood for my home. Like anyone else, some days I just wake up grumpy. Poor Shane, he tries so hard to cheer me up. But when I get in that mood it’s hard to just get out of it. It’s comfortable to dwell in self pity and feel sad. I feel like I’d rather just hang my head for a while than do something about it. But that is the worst attitude to have. As a Christian, I don’t have much of a reason to be feeling down like I do sometimes…at least not to stay down.

When Saul was feeling that way in 1 Samuel 16, he called for David to play music for him. Music is so powerful and if you are listening to the right music it can really bless your heart and point you toward the Lord. But then, of course, if you are listening to the wrong music it can only cause you to feel more self pity and sadness. Music is a powerful language. After David played his harp the Bible says that Saul was refreshed and well and that the evil spirit had left him (1 Samuel 16:23). How do you feel after listening to your music?

So now, when I am in a grumpy mood I like to listen to godly music. It really lifts my spirit. I have been really loving a couple artists lately. First, my favorite, is the Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team. After listening to those songs I feel like I want to go to each community up here and teach them about Jesus. I want to have ladies in my home so I can tell them what Christ has done for me. I want to tell them how amazing He is! Also I really love Lois and India Rasquinha. After listening to them I just have to pull out my guitar and sing to the Lord. You just can’t hold in God’s praises when you are listening to the right music!

What music have you been enjoying lately? I’d love to hear some of your favorites and why you love them!

For old times’ sake, me and Anna

  1. Oh Sands… thank you for this post! I needed it… I think that was one of the best (if not the best) parts of college – keeping our hearts uplifted in worship to God and fellowship with each other. Miss you!!
